how to do this? obviously a turntable would be needed but aside from that how does one go about learning this? I have done a small amount of googling and cannot seem to find a 'how to' or even what kind if software would be used to assemble the phots taken into a moveable object. anyone have any resources for this? also would it be possible to view a 3d object inside krpano or use krpano as the 'viewer' to do such a thing?

well a turntable is great for small objects, I have an old LP turntable that I used before, just turn the table little by little depending on how smooth you want the object to rotate its the number of photos you need.
for big objects like a car, lay down a piece of rope around the object and just rotate using the rope for guide, the same principal, depending on how smooth its the number of photos, the only downside is that the background moves also, but sometimes it looks cool or if you have a big garage you can control the background and lighting.
for software you can use pano2qtvr but beware there are no more updates, and the program will strip out any exif data from your photos, as well as minor bugs here and there, nothing major.
there should be other software but I can't remember the name right now, I will look around and let you know :)
hope it helps

google "3d object photography" and you should get a good start on information.
For a flash presentation solution... here's a sample (one of many) http://www.flashtuning.net/components/Adv…-AS-2.0_11.html
I played with the free limited version they have but haven't done much with it.
In theory a flash based image rotation swf could be used as a plugin in krpano... but it will dependent upon the swf you want to plugin. I can't remember for sure, but I think there can be issues with controlling the "stage" or something (sorry, I don't get into flash... I'm just trying to recall what I've seen on the forum with other swf plugins like galleries and such).
As far as how... turntable and light box for smaller items.
One key would be to have a good software that could remove the background if needed... I think anything3d did something like this as well...
http://www.anything3d.com/product/software/composer.php3
... but it's been a long time since I used it.

The germans seem to be experts on vr objects

This one is crazy...The background changes and there is some sort of blurring transition. amazing
http://www.renderwahnsinn.com/swf/cfl/start.htmlWe tried shooting a car inside a warehouse and did what shanti said. Used a rope and drew around the car. The result is a bit disappointing. The car doesn't turn smoothly and seems to jerk. Well, practice makes perfect. So we were thinking of getting a revolving stage but it's expensive. I contacted a manufacturer of revolving stages. Here's his picasa album.

we'll probably have a simpler version built for us by some local machine shop here.
Actually if you feed the photos here http://picasaweb.google.com/tonybxu/MotionControl6MTurntable# into pano2vr you'll get an object vr already. but I think he didn't shoot this with a tripod because the shots are not consistent.

http://www.renderwahnsinn.com/swf/cfl/start.htmlIf you go really slow you can see that the transitions / blurs are based upon the image sequence... and it's very nice work.
I played around with a java based program a long time ago and it was fun. What I liked at the time was that I could setup a image grid and rotate the full 360 horizontal as well as + / - 90... which you could do now with krpano. Maybe I'll work on a demo with some sample images.
-
So you're saying you could do a car vr object with krpano? If you have time please do show us a sample thanks!
-
OK - not as effective as I was thinking...
here's a very crude example... and only goes to show that there's more to "3d object" than just flipping through some images.
http://testsite.marlincreek.com/demo/object/object.html
I wouldn't ever try to pass this off as a real solution but it's a basic proof of concept.
There are probably several ways to optimize this and get something passable... but that will have to be another night.

Last month we created our first object movies. We would be really happy if we could view them with krpano. Imagine to use krpano for pano 360 - virtual tours, gigapixel, 360 video, 3d object movies...the ultimate tool.
We are using yofla 3d rotator for 3d objects. You can find them on the bottom of the following page.

Graydon, did you just happen to have a turntable big enough for a car layihng around to test like that or did those images come from the internet? :) Using krpano would be OMGHolyfriggencrapkickassawsome.
Orbit your 3d objects are nice. I will be testing with this stuff soon. A local jeweler has expressed some interest in this I'd like to be able to provide this as an additional service.

Another link that may be useful. A 360 flash component. (I haven't used it)
http://www.flashloaded.com/flashcomponents/controlvr/
I can imagine doing a panorama of a shop, and then having various objects on shelves as hotspots that open a 360-degree view of the object. Anyone done this yet ?

I keep a couple extra toys like this just lying around waiting for opportunities to use them ...
...but, since I was in a time crunch I just followed the link at the end of milotimbol's post (not his signature link).
Also - I forgot to admit it on my earlier post... but I had to cheat a little and rely on some js in order to get things to function... so, it's not entirely xml based.
